Do I need to wait until the renewal date is closer?

No. You can transfer/renew at any time. All of the existing time with the current registrar will be transferred over with the domain name. In fact, we would advise a transfer of a domain to us at least 2 weeks prior to expiration, to avoid any unnecessary delay or face the risk of losing it.
